This page charts Oliver's progress and reminds us of his milestones.
3 1/4 Years old
A beach theme to the photos this time.
And continuing on the beach theme. the water wasn't that warm as Ollie noticed when it reached his delicate parts.
First off since he's turned three he can now swing all by himself. Motivated no doubt by his sister....here's the video In a similar vein Evie has had to learn to wipe her own bum after a poo because of school, what Evie can Ol must do. So he's now wiping his own bum. It is a little unfair on Ol though. Evie tends to have immaculate conception poos. She wipes once to confirm it's clean and then moves on, unfortunately Ollie tends to do 'loose bowel movements' so he has to do rather more. But good on him for trying.
He is also continuing on with his rather clever ways of asking for things. A recent ploy of his goes like this....He sidles up to you and nonchalantly asks if you like Lion King/Television/Sipderman etc. When you reply in the affirmative he then says - 'oh would you like to watch some now then'.
Cars are still the number 1 fascination and he never seems to tire of playing with them (this trait is also starting to rub off onto Poppy). Kicking a ball comes in 2nd still but quite a distant second. Since starting at playball a few weeks ago his can now catch a ball - I'm feeling bad I didn't teach him that. His swimming sadly seems to have deteriorated further - he is only going once a week and the lesson really doesn't teach him swimming. Hopefully over our upcoming holiday we can rectify that a little.
He's recently started counting 'properly'. He has been saying the numbers for a while but he has now started counting objects and getting the number right.
3 Years old
Well well well, three years old. We had a rather good party for him with around 35 people around our house for a bbq and play. Thank goodness it didn't rain - however we had spent the morning carrying out furniture into the garage and emptying the kids bedroom into ours to give another play room just in case it did rain.
In terms of progress words and vocabulary have been the most impressive over the last 3 months. He's really stringing his sentences together now. His pronunciation is a little off on some words but we like them better the Ollie way - here's the vid. He is also very capable of turning on the charm. He is the most delightful, polite and amusing boy whenever he is up past bedtime. It is very amusing. However he can also be devious...he and Hannelore (our Au Pair) were playing a game running around and trying to shoot each other with a Playmobil Canon. When it got to Ollie's turn to do the chasing he said to Hannelore that they needed to clear away the toys so they wouldn't fall over on them as they ran around. Hannelore (being the responsible girl she is) turned around to start clearing up. As soon as she turned around - he shot her. Devious - absolutely. Kudos with Daddy - oh yes. The other major achievement has been the loss of his dummy. After arriving back from Disney the first night we couldn't find his dummy. He was absolutely exhausted and fell asleep anyway. The next night we told him a white lie and said we still couldn't find it - and he went to sleep again. After that he did ask and we bought him a new car for being a good boy. It was remarkably easy - and we were dreading it. He's finally cracked peddling. I realised that just pestering him and showing him was not the answer. Instead I said that he could have a big piece of Easter Egg if he could ride all the way along our driveway. In five minutes he was peddling - as with adults its all about finding the right incentives!!
2 Years 9 months (15th March 2010)
Progress: Overall he's continuing his trend of being a happy fellow. The terrible twos are not particularly terrible and he seems to enjoy life. - Dutch kindergarten is still a big hit - he really enjoys going. However the only Dutch we've heard him speak is: 'lekker' - which means tasty. However he does use 'Klaar' meaning finished after he's taken a poo while at kindergarten. Nice. - On the subject of languages with the arrival of Hannelore (our new au pair) he is now hearing some Spanish as well. His first word......'coche' or car. Predictable. - He's taken to singing quite a bit. His favourite songs are 'Insy Winsy Spider', Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Happy Birthday. The later probably because it's associated with cake. - He's just started drinking from a cup without pouring 50% of the contents down his front. This has been quite a while coming but I have been looking forward to it since I hate washing up all the drinking cups with straws. - He's starting to be able to dress himself. So far we have pants (always with cars, diggers, tractors, trucks etc on them) and trousers. Tops and socks are too difficult as yet. - Naps are a funny animal. He will go a week without any having one, then the following week he seems to need several. It's pretty odd but when he does need a sleep he his very cute - he tells us he wants to go to bed and happily trots off.
2 Years 6 months (15th December 2010)
Progress: - We've put Ollie in a Dutch kindergarten called Twickletjes. He's the only English speaker there so we're hoping he'll pick up Dutch. He's really enjoying it so far and is keen to get in in the mornings. But he's also very happy to see Mummy at lunchtime and comes running out with a big smile on his face. - He's now not wearing his nappy at bedtime either. He'd not had a wee in his nappy for over two months so we've just taken it off. So far so good. - He's singing along to songs now. Jingle bells became a favourite as we moved towards Christmas. - He's counting up to 10 - We are starting to see evidence of the terrible two's, but its all rather mild compared to Evie. On the whole is a happy chappie who smiles a lot and keeps us happy. - Climbing skills are not bad. This video was taken in November and he looks pretty competent. - Daddy has introduced to him to the 'Italian Job' film (of 'you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!' quote). He loves the chase at the end with the 3 minis. - His speaking is coming on leaps and bounds and we have started catching Evie and Ollie having 'conversations'. The level is at ''I've been to playschool and I've been playing with cars!!'' - Dinosaurs are becoming a big thing (not as big as cars obviously but still important). Daddy has to pretend to be a dinosaur quite a lot.
2 Years 3 months (15th September 2010)
Progress over the last three months - Well despite the move to Holland, sleeping in many different beds Ollie is fully potty trained. He's only had 3 accidents. Its quite amazing - there was very little if any input from us. Excellent. - He's started on fairly long sentences now with his talking - although we're not sure what he's saying all the time. - Some reverse progress. As predicted we have only being swimming once in the first 6 weeks in Holland so Ollie is regressing in the swimming stakes..... - He is having trouble adjusting to closed in shoes. He doesn't like them - being so used to bare feet and flip flops. Wellies are about the only closed in shoes he will wear. - He's a very wily fellow. When he doesn't something wrong he is very quick to say 'Sorry Mummy' 'Sorry Daddy' and give you puppydog eyes, which gets him off the hook a lot. However if it is serious he really doesn't like being told off and goes into an almighty crying fit. - The favourite things are still cars and balls. - He also likes being thrown around and made dizzy alot. Nice vid here of him doing a drunk man impression - And slides.....like here. The height doesn't seem to bother him.
2 Years (15th June 2010)
Again time seems to moving faster and faster. We can't believe its been 2 years since Ollie joined us...
Progress between 23 months and 2 years: - He's begun a 'naked stage'. He seems to have gone off clothes, and strips them off at the first opportunity. Interestingly this has coincided with going to the toilet. When he is not wearing a nappy he quite merrily takes himself outside or to the toilet for a wee. No prompting from Mummy or Daddy. So I guess we'll be going to potty training soon. Here's a short vid of him splashing around outside video - He's still laughing a lot and likes to play games. - He copies Evie more and more, some things are good, like saying please. Others - like screaming and being a drama queen - are not.
23 Months (15th May 2010)
Progress between 22 and 23 months: - At 22 months and 1 week he can swim!!! Armbands have been ditched. The speed and style are not much to be written home about but he can propel himself through the water without any assistance. Quite amazing. His legs do a bicycle pedal movement - very amusing. These are the videos we took the second day - a couple are underwater ones and show him smiling while swimming: Ollie swim 1 (2.6Mb) | Ollie swim 2 (1.3Mb) | Ollie Swim 3 (3.2Mb) - His words are just coming on leaps and bounds. All except Evie who he now calls Diddy. He came out with 'Daddy don't do that' the other day. Also stuff like - inside, outside, walk which are not the standard nouns which characterised the early words. He also understands the concept of 'me' 'you' and uses it. - We finally happy in his ability to go up and down the stairs so the stair gates stay open all the time now. This must come as some relief to the grandparents who will no longer have to negotiate stairgates in their house when we visit. - At 22 months 2 weeks he started throwing a wobbly when we tried to put him down to sleep in his cot in the evening. We struggled with this for a couple of nights before realising he wanted to sleep in a bed. So thats it - he's in a big bed now next to Evie and very happy. - He's now finally down to 1 nap a day. - Even better he's down to 1 (normal) and 2 maximum poos per day. Much better than the 3-4 we're used to. He even tells you when he's done it. - He did his first wee over the toilet - standing up like Daddy. It wasn't particularly accurate though and a good amount ended up on the floor. However its the first time he's told us he needed to go weewee.
22 Months (15th April 2010)
Progress between 21 and 22 months: - He's understanding more and more - however he seems to be doing the opposite of what is asked of him. A very strong opinion is surfacing. - He is very happy about communicating and is really chuffed with his new found skill. He says 'come please' and we come. Up please and we pick him up. - The tantrums have become more mild and less frequent. In hindsight we think it was because he had just learnt to ask for things (juice, chocolate etc) but he wouldn't always get them which he maybe found a bit confusing. - The hitting has subsided a somewhat from last month. A combination of loud shouts, naughty step and a couple of quick slaps to the thigh have reigned it in a bit - still work to do though. It is Daddy's fault however for pretending to box with him......so Daddy's been on the naughty step. - Its 6 of one and half a dozen of another but Ollie and Evie do have quite a few barnies. However on one side Evie does get worked up very quickly when Ollie does something - much more worked up than with her friends. On the other hand Ollie knows he is winding her up - he has a sparkle in his eye when he does it. He knows how to press Evie's buttons. (He knows how to press Mummy's buttons as well). - He has finally got all his teeth. Whoohoo!!! No more interrupted nights. - We've started trying to get him to swim between us as well (ditching the arm-bands). He does not make that good a progress but he certainly enjoys it - see below.
21 Months (15th March 2010)
Progress between 21 and 22 months: - You'd have to be Mummy, Daddy or Ginny to hear it but he is stringing 2 words together. Juice please. Car here. More please. Evie bed. - He can do a forward roll on the ground. - He's very much getting into the pool life and really enjoys playing and jumping off the side. - Although he and Evie still play pretty well together there are also getting a few more tussles. - Oh dear 1. He's started to develop a rather aggressive streak, and is going through a stage of hitting, head-butting and pushing people, albeit not very hard. The naughty step and shouting do not appear to be having much of an effect. Daddy is advocating an old fashioned alternative, Mummy wants to persevere a little longer with the current punishments. - Oh dear 2. right at the end of the month he seems to have hit the terrible twos early....Some major tantrums going on., rolling around on the floor screaming jobs. - Other than the hitting and the tantrums (?!) he is quite a charming little man - he still smiles very easily and has a cheeky attitude that is difficult not to like. We're being manipulated.
20 Months (15th Feb 2010)
Photos of Ollie enjoying his swing:
Progress between 19 and 20 months - He has now started building with the blocks (as opposed to knocking them down) - He has just got tall enough and smart enough to open doors in the house. - More words coming (to be expected). The most important are - thank-you and the first thing that represents 'Evie'. Its more like Eeeeee though. - He got hand, foot and mouth disease, but as you can see from the pictures it is not really bothering him. - And this one I have to include. A man after my own heart - he discovered that when he pushes his rubber duck on his tummy it makes a noise like a fart and finds it very amusing. The first time he did it he collapsed into squeals on laughter. This is the one where we finally had the video handy - listen carefully for the fart noise....
19 Months (15th Jan 2010) Whoops, missed one. what with Christmas and our PC dying we're missed December.
Progress between 17 and 19 months: - Words are starting to come. There is a strong boy focus - tractor, aeroplane and helicopter (or tacta, airplan, copter in Ollie speak). Shoes have found their way in. Others are: Mama, Dad, book, hello, goodbye, woof-woof and cat. He can also cluck like a chicken and quack like a duck. However mostly its just very cute babbling. - He's now finally decided he does like sitting down with a book with Mummy or Daddy (as opposed to just throwing it around). - He understands loads and will shake his head when he doesn't agree. He's starting to understand body parts - tummy, nose, feet, eyes. - He's started washing his own face and being helpful in an Ollie kind of way. - Evie and Ollie are really starting to play well together. Especially chase. Its very cute to watch.
17 Months (15th Nov 2009)
Progress between 16 and 17 months - Words are coming very slowly. Only one new one this month. "Gone". As in - the foods all gone. - His co-ordination is pretty good. He's learnt to jump properly over the last month. Also he's very good bouncing on the trampoline - even when Evie and some of her friends are in there. He just gets stuck in. ollie jumping (1.4Mb) - Cars, bikes, and balls I think are Ollie's 3 favourite things. He gets mesmerised when we go to the park when all three are in abundance. - He's doing a nice line in forward rolls. Off the side of an armchair onto a airbed which softens the fall. He thinks they are hilarious. - He hates being told no. He looks from Mum to Dad and Dad to Mum to see if either one of us smiles. If no-one does then he bursts out crying... - He's starting to work stuff out. If he can't reach something on a table he goes off to find a stool or other object to stand on so he can reach it. - He really really loves painting and has a surprisingly deft touch - quite the contrary to what I would've expected. - Chasing is now coming into it's own. He loves it.
16 Months (15th Oct 2009) The photos
Progress between 15 and 16 months - First word!!! Our children are definitely fitting into the sexual stereotypes. Whereas Evie's first word was shoes, Ollie's was "Car". He also has an Ollie word which is "Ba". In Ollie language this means either ball or balloon, or, if accompanied by peeking and arms outstretched, it means 'boo'. - He's started trying to jump and he finds it very amusing. He's not so great at it though. - He's now swimming across the pool with his armbands. Before he just floated aimlessly. - He's now getting quite into ride on toys. He's just big enough for them and it he loves pushing himself along. - He can understand simple requests like shut the door, bathtime, get your shoes.
And there a couple of videos Ollie just before bed (2Mb) and Relaxing(?) before bed (11Mb)
15 Months (15th Sep 2009) The photos
Progress between 14 and 15 months. - He's getting ever more vocal but still has no real words. Pointing and shouting seems to get him what he wants anyway. - He's mastered sliding. He's now good to go up and down the slide in the playroom and in the pool. The pool is the tricky one because its pretty quick (being wet). The usual 1st attempt of any child is for their bottom to go shooting off, flipping them backwards resulting in a violent thud as their heads hit the slide. It happened to Evie and countless other children - Ollie so far has avoided that fate though. We haven't got a video of the slide at the pool which is best - but here's the playroom one. Playroom Slide - Eating is really coming on and he doesn't like being fed any more. He has to do it himself. Here's quick video. - The morning nap has returned. It turned out to be a temporary affair and he's much happier having it. - His teeth are still coming slowly and steadily and we still have the explosive poos. Joy...
14 Months (15th Aug 2009) The photos:
Progress between 13 and 14 months. - He's got quite into solid food food now and loves munching what we're eating. He's also very happy with marmite - you either love it or you hate it. - Oliver James got Christened at 13 months and 2 weeks. It was a beautiful day, lots of champagne was drunk and all the family got together. - He's taken quite a shine to balls and rather likes kicking them around. His dribbling skills aren't all that bad - especially considering the ball comes over his knees. The video below shows him in action after his Christening. - He's developed his sister's love of chase so I think in a couple of months they will be haring around after each other. Although Evie is faster now, he's showing more speed promise for the future (well he is a boy). - He's a pretty resilient soul - I think second children have to be given the abuse they receive from the older sibling. - He's started making rather cute noises (Ollie words) when he's concentrating and doing things. - Right on 14 months he's decided he doesn't need his morning nap. So he's now down to just the one in the afternoon, which makes doing stuff a lot easier.
Ollie Dribbling (2 Mb)
13 Months (15th July 2009) The photos (a farming theme to these)
Progress between 1 year and 13 months. - We all went back to the UK for the summer vacation, the week after Ollie's birthday. Back in the UK walking proved to be the new trick and he'd pretty much got it licked with plenty of confidence at 1 year 2 weeks. - While he was in the UK he was completely unphased by a series a large animals we took him to see - Labrador dog, sheep, goats, cows and horses. This was even after a couple of falls after being knocked by the dog. - At 13 months 3 weeks Ollie got his first molar. And didn't we know about it for the next few days. His teeth really do bother him, nothing like Evie who seemed to have no problem. The teeth have also triggered a rather unfortunate trait - very very runny and explosive poos. Again something we didn't have the pleasure of experiencing with Evie.
1 Year (15th June 2009) The photos
Progress between 11 months and 1 year - The walking has been rather fitful. After the 11month walk he actually regressed and decided the whole walking thing was over-rated. He much preferred crawling. - We are very poor parents. We had a nice big birthday bash for him and then after taking 2 photos the camera battery ran out. We took some photos using a friends camera but she subsequently lost the camera before we downloaded the photos. So we were left with not many memories of this auspicious occasion.
11 months The Photos. We got quite a few while on holiday, so we've put on rather more than usual.
Progress between 10 and 11 months - Well he finally got the hang of crawling proper at about 10months 2 weeks while we were on holiday. Before that he was still resorting mainly to commando crawl. It's been a revelation. He was starting to get rather grumpy before having this mobility. After he could crawl properly he just became sooooo happy in comparison. We're guessing it was frustration on his part at not being able to move. - Assisted walking is coming along and he loves being on his hind legs. At 10 months 2 weeks he was walking only holding on to Mummy or Daddy with one hand. He's also got the hang of pushing the trolley (video below). - He's also started babbling rather more, which is kind of cute. Also video below. - He's pulling himself up on furniture and cruising around the table and sofa. - He's a bit of a wrecker. Everything he gets hold of he tests out for hardness by bashing it repeatedly either on a table or the floor - blocks, spoon, toys and crockery all get the same treatment. He needs an exclusion zone around him. - I can't quite explain it but this last month he's somehow turned more into a little person rather than a baby. - Last gasp breaking news!!!! On 15th May - bang on 11 months he took his first steps. Quite amusing. I stood him up and let go - he did a quick check all around him and realised no-one was holding him. He grinned and then made his first steps. Very cute. Put a couple of walks on - one early one and one later. He was very happy with himself.
Ollie Pushing Trolley (2 Mb) | Ollie Babble (6 Mb) | Ollie Walk 1 (3.2 Mb) | Ollie Walk 2 (3.8 Mb)
10 months The Photos
Progress between 9 and 10 months - He's just started expressing an opinion as to what he wants, and by God if he doesn't get what he wants he's MAD. I thought I was impatient, but it turns out I am the epitome of peace and tranquility compared to Ollie when he doesn't get his own way. - He loves being walked around, someone holding his hands. He's also pretty stable when holding onto furniture. - Still only has 1 tooth. - We did a rough check on his weight / height curves (all at home). He seems to be on the 25% for height and the 75% curve for weight. In other words he's turning into a barrel. - At 9 months 3 weeks he finally managed a crawl. There are a couple of vids below - one showing the full progress of the "Commando" crawl at 10 months and the other showing the first day of crawling. If you listen to the crawling video you can hear Evie having a particularly noisy meltdown upstairs. We're not beating her within an inch of her life, honest. - We think he's starting to look more like Evie, and certain expressions he has are exactly the same as hers.
Some videos:

9 months The Photos
Progress between 8 and 9 months - 8 months 2 weeks. Ollie can clap his hands, not a fantastically useful life skill but still progress. We also witnessed a wave goodbye at this age as well - but it seems to have been a one off as we have not seen it since. - 8 months 2 weeks. He has started knowing his own name. He turns around when you call his name. - He's started swimming lessons (as you can see above) and he loves it. He splashes and plays around incredibly well. He treats it like a huge bath. He also seems a lot more chilled about being dunked than Evie (well he doesn't have to worry about his hair). - 8 months 3 weeks saw a very impressive (if late feat). He managed to pull himself to his feet using a bit of furniture which he was very happy about. Nanna was also here to witness it. - Then right at the end of the month we had two milestones.... - He finally got his first tooth. It doesn't seem to bother him but he won't let us really have a good look. - Also he finally made some progress doing a commando crawl / lunge / belly rock towards something he wanted. It wasn't a pretty, speedy or efficient spectacle but it was unaided movement. He does actually get up on all fours as well but hasn't mastered the movement thing yet.
8 months
The photos
Progress between 7 and 8 months - He's finally getting somewhere on the mobility issue!! He rolled over from his tummy to his back at 7 1/2 months. This was after a stern chat from his father that he was lagging behind his big sister and he had to pull his socks up. - At 7 months 3 week he had his first bit of "chewable" food (despite not having any teeth). He gummed and mauled some buttered toast to pretty good effect and he seemed to like it. At the same time we gave him the opportunity to try feeding himself his puree - it wasn't very successful. - He now goes along to Evie's music class and gets given his own shakers and bells and loves it. He listens to all the songs and nursery rhymes very attentively so maybe we have a musical child - no idea where he gets that from. - He's moving his walker around better now but still not forwards. - Real progress at the end of the month. He's sleeping all the way through the night. Bed at 6:45. Top-up feed at 10pm. Sleeps through until 6:00. Fantastic!!! We're starting to feel a bit more human again......He's even doing it without a dummy. - He really does like his food and is turning into a little barrel. He's not that tall/long but we've had to put him in 12 months clothes because of his tummy.
7 months
First off the shots
Also a nice little video on the swing together (not as good as giggling one of 6 months)
Evie and Ollie on swing (5Mb) Progress between 6 and 7 months - He is very investigative. Anything in arms reach is examined thoroughly before being gummed and then thrown down.
6 months
Few mug shots, it was around Christmas as you may detect
Also a video of Ollie giggling at his big sister - it's a big download but worth it.
Progress between 5 and 6 months - He's onto solid foods proper (apple, pear, banana etc). In fact he rather likes his food. We were very excited about this since when Evie went onto solid food, within a week she was sleeping through the night. Unfortunately Ollie hadn't read the script. He is still waking up. - He shows no signs of rolling or crawling but loves being held up on his feet. Definite preference for walking. - He is pretty proficient in sitting upright now.
5 months
First off the mug shots....
Progress between 4 and 5 months A big update this month, lots of things to report. - He is much more coordinated grabbing things. - At around 4 months he had some formula for the first time. He's getting quite hungry and is very impatient at the speed of flow of mummy's milk. - 4 months and 1 week he had his first dip in the pool. However the water was a bit cool and he wasn't completely taken with it as you can see below. Subsequent trips he has enjoyed more.
- He provides quite a bit of entertainment to his sister. We were trying some sitting practice which generally results in him falling over. Evie loves the falling over part and keeps saying "Again, again" - He's sitting at 4 months 2 weeks!!! Some videos below...
Ollie sitting 1 (2.6Mb) | Ollie sitting 2 (10Mb)
- Also a giggling video: ollie_giggling (8Mb) - 4 months 3 weeks and he's had his first solid food!!! Runny baby rice. He loved it but found the whole eating thing a little confusing. Trying to suck and swallow. It all went down though. Since then he's also had pear and apple - which are even more exciting for him. - Had his first haircut. Something Evie still hasn't had. He was beginning to look a bit tufty so Jo evened it out.
We also thought it'd be good to jot down a few differences between the two of them. - Evie poos at least once a day and sometimes more. when she was Olli'e age it would be 4 or 5 times. He seems to store it up for 5-6 days then have a poo day. Giving us 2 or 3 poos that day. Lovely. - He dribbles. Boy does he dribble.
Last of all we wanted to put in a few Ollie and Evie shots which we love.
16 weeks
Progress between 3 and 4 months - He's still piling on the pounds - He can now grab things above him on his jungle gym. Gradually getting his co-ordination. - Really loves people talking and smiling at him. - Still waking up once per night, although once every 10 or so nights Jo gets a full nights rest. - Likes standing on his feet. - Loves being held on the side of the trampoline while Evie and her friends are jumping on it. He laughs when any of them fall over.
12 weeks First the photo...
Now what has he been up to... - He's now started chuckling with Mummy, Daddy and Evie when they chuckle - He goos and gaas. - He loves bath-time with Evie and Mum or Dad and generally cries when he is pulled out. - He's still showing an amazing resilience to Evie's exuberance. - He's just starting to get very demanding at feed time (as if not enough is coming out) - Will sit up wedged in the corner of the sofa (or plane seat) quite happily - Is pretty happy doing his tummy time.
9 weeks
8 weeks
7 weeks
6 weeks - Despite Evie and Ollie being within an ounce of each other at birth Ollie is now heavier at 6 weeks than Evie was at 12 weeks. Wow!!
5 weeks - We have the first smile, but not on camera unfortunately.
4 weeks One whole month and ..... we have eyes.
3 weeks Yes, well you can see our problem. I would forgive you if you were to ask - has he got any eyes?
He's doing pretty well on the food stakes though. He eats no end. He's put on 2 lbs since birth. So he's added a 1/3 of his body mass in 3 weeks. Wow!!
2 weeks Still not seeing much more of those eyes. He doesn't really like his nappy being changed which does give the opportunity to see his eyes but it is usually accompanied with a wide screaming mouth as well. I think Jo's being rough with his 'bits'
He is quite active (even with his eyes closed). He's constantly moving his arms and legs around.
